Car Culture - The Car as a Sculpture at Lentos Kunstmuseum, Linz

The motor car is considered man's favourite toy. A cult object and a symbol of the freedom of the individual, the motor car is the classic medium of mobility and a quintessential symbol of life in the lap of luxury.

The LENTOS's Great Exhibition Hall morphs into a parking lot, on which artistic vehicles converge for an interactive reunion: cars as sculptures, conceived and modified by artists. The emotional charge associated with luxury marques such as Rolls-Royce, Porsche and Ferrari is put into perspective through references to trivial images from pop culture. The socially pertinent roles played by models such as the GDR Trabbi, the VW Beetle or the entire Mercedes marque are dissected.

Modifications that are as playful as they are purposeful bring hidden connotations to light. The exhibition aims to make the social, artistic and economic relevance of the car cult explicit from an artistic perspective, whose chief attributes are irreverent, surprising and, above all, entertaining. The exhibition was conceived by the ZKM |Medienmuseum in Karlsruhe on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the motor car in 2011 (Curators: Peter Weibel, Bernhard Serexhe).
