The work I Thought I Knew Who I Was is a text based work, first realised as a hand painted mural in the colours of the Swedish national flag, blue and yellow. The work paraphrases a quote of a competitor participating in the Swedish reality show Allt For Sverige. The TV-show features US citizens, who have, in one way or the other, family relations in Sweden stemming from the massive influx of Swedes to America during the 19th century. The participants are traveling to Sweden to compete in being ‘most Swedish’. The winner will have his/her true identity revealed and meet the Swedish relatives.
I Thought I knew Who I Was deals with notions of migration and constructed identities. The work draws attention to contemporary conflicts by pointing out similar historic phenomenons of mass-migration. One third of the Swedish population migrated to America in the 19th and early 20th century in the hope of a better life, and has had an immense influence on american culture.
