Hospital Equipment

Hospital Equipment at Salamieh Hospital, Syria

A new version of SUPERFLEX’s Hospital Equipment, originally presented at von Bartha, S-chanf in February 2017, has now been shipped to Salamieh Hospital, Syria to be used by staff and patients. Working closely with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) Syria and the hospital to identify what is needed, SUPERFLEX sourced necessary surgical tools - a mobile lamp, a surgeon‘s table and a surgical bearing - which were then exhibited within the gallery space. Following the exhibition, the tools - conceived as a single artwork – have now been received in Syria.

Hospital Equipment Installation view

Hospital Equipment consist of an installation displaying an operation theatre - and a photograph of the operation theatre exhibited in the gallery. Setting the scene of a life and death situation inside the gallery space, the viewer is positioned as a voyeur to a fatal conflict of war and loss.

When the exhibition ends, the hospital equipment will be shipped directly to a selected hospital in a conflict zone to be used by doctors and patients. The photograph will remain with the collector.

Hospital Equipment

SUPERFLEX, Hospital Equipment, 2014

The installation consists of an operating table and surgical lamps. Selected in collaboration with Palestinian partners (doctors and organisations working in Gaza) this professional equipment suits the urgent and long-term needs in hospitals in Gaza, Palestine.
After being exhibited, the installation, will be immediately transported to a hospital in Gaza.
Evidently, when installed at Den Frie, Hospital Equipment is an artwork – having the concept of the ready-made in mind. The piece is within the institutional context and discourse. It can be argued that the work shifts identity when displaced to another context (the hospital), where it will regain its initial purpose – saving lives.
