C.R.E.A.M. - 5 year plan at Kunsthaus Graz
Cash rules everything around me

SUPERFLEX presents a collaboration with Kunsthaus Graz over a period of five years, introducing tools which address some of the main economic concerns of our time while engaging directly with the audience. Initiated in 2017 with the presentation of the original installation C.R.E.A.M., a new project will be launched every year until the culmination with a solo exhibition in 2021.

By choosing to complete these projects over this specific period of time, SUPERFLEX refers directly to the Five-Year Plan principle : "an instrument that has been used to plan economic activities in countries that support Marxist-Socialist tenets" - as explained by Barbara Steiner, director of the Kunsthaus Graz.

The first installation, C.R.E.A.M., consists of an ATM covered in silver chrome. While simultaneously appearing as a fetish object, a sculpture and a mirror, it is also fully functional and usable for the public. "By cladding the ATM with chrome, it takes on an immaterial aspect, yet remains an oddly material object. It becomes a powerful fetish operating in the consumer world". The second part of the installation is a text deriving from lyrics by the rap group Wu-Tang Clan, which not only sets the tone of the theoretical discussion but also the title of the work:

C.R.E.A.M. has been also perceived as an obituary for the end of cash money era. In a similar direction, FREE SHOP will be launched in 2018 as an intervention to explore the collapse of value.

FREE SHOP can theoretically be carried out in any regular shop or commercial store. The products sold are, at predetermined times, completely free of charge for the customer. But the action must remain unannounced regarding location, time or possible sponsors. The ultimate objective of this action is an abrupt alteration of the expected logic of purchasing.

POWER TOILET and SUPERSHOW are other planned interventions of SUPERFLEX for this specific project. A new version of POWER TOILET will be installed as a permanent public art work, copying precisely the toilets of a well known financial institution. The installation suggests the multiplication of power by requiring a participation of the audience. Finally, SUPERSHOW – more than a show, analyses the immaterial value of institutions as Kunsthaus Graz by reverting its usual transactions: the museum will, for instance, pay the visitors while they become the
The culmination of the collaboration with Kunsthaus will be a solo exhibition with tools by SUPERFLEX, to be held in 2021.
